The Umbrella Academy – TV Series Review

The Umbrella Academy (TV Series) (2019) - Filmaffinity

Ok so I am absolutely obsessed with this show. I love it. Like I really love it. ‘The Umbrella Academy’ is a Netflix original series based on the comics written by Gerard Way and illustrate by Gabriel Bá. It now has 2 seasons, the second of which was added to Netflix in July 2020 so it is brand new. Fans are already begging for a season 3 and the show remained in the top 10 most watched on Netflix for weeks.

On October 1, 1989, 43 women went into labour. The only problem was that none of them had been pregnant when they woke up that morning. Reginald Hargreeves, an eccentric old man, believed that these children would be special and so he set out to adopt each and every one of them. He got 7. These 7 children would form The Umbrella Academy which he set up in order to train each of them to fight and harness their super-human abilities.

Luther/Number 1 (played by Tom Hopper) has super-human strength, Diego/Number 2 (David Castaneda) can control the trajectory of knives and bullets, Allison/Number 3 (Emmy Raver-Lampman) can control minds, Klaus/Number 4 (Robert Sheehan) can converse with and summon the dead, Five/Number 5 (Aidan Gallagher) can travel through time and space, Ben/Number 6 (Justin H. Min) can summon tentacled monsters and Vanya/Number 7 (Ellen Page)… well she’s a little different.

These 7 siblings became estranged over time as a result of their immense dislike for their father. However, his death prompts them to return to their childhood home where Five, fresh from his trip to the future, brings unsettling news. The world will end in 8 days and they’re the only ones who can save it.

I’m not usually a huge fan of science fiction but, honestly, this is one of the best shows I think I’ve ever seen. Even if the plot concept doesn’t really appeal to you I would still urge you to watch it for the characters and their interactions. Their ways, habits and connections make the show so much more than just a sci-fi. They make it about friendship, family, love and how much you’re actually willing to risk.

I’m giving this show an easy 10/10.

The cast is truly exceptional. Each of these characters have unusual habits and mannerisms and I have to commend each and every actor for their beautiful and believable portrayals. I am especially in awe of the performances by Aidan Gallagher and Ellen Page. their characters were exceptionally complex but they embraced them and created people who were actually just broken and who never wanted to end up where they did.

I would very highly recommend this show to everyone. It is tense, hilarious and such an enjoyable watch.

Give it a watch and let me know what you think!

Or if you’ve seen it already, who is your favourite character? (It’s Klaus, right?)

Lots of love,

Dramatically Dramatic xx
